Prayer in everyday situations – Part 2

Lords Prayer

This is part 2 of a post we did a couple of days ago and I strongly advise you to go and look at part 1 before reading this post. You can find part 1 here.

In part 1 we talked a little bit about how prayer is like a phone call, in that we phone people through out our daily lives to say thank you, sorry, ask questions and for help. In this post we are going to look into what the Lord’s prayer means to us in modern life.

The lords prayer can be found in the book of Mathew 6, verses 9 to 13.

“This is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

Jesus states just before saying the Lords prayer, “This is how you should pray”. This is Jesus telling the disciples, that this prayer, is how God wishes they pray. The Lords Prayer is almost a template for prayer. It can be divided into five prayer sections.

       1. Praising God

The first part of the Lords prayer is praising God. It says “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” This reminds us that we should praise God. Because when you pray you are talking to the creator of the universe.

       2. Praying for God’s work in the world

The next part of the prayer says ” Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” This reminds us to pray that Gods work continues. It also says that your trust should be put in God as we should let his will be done.

       3. Daily Life

Verse 11 says “Give us today our daily bread.” This is telling us to acknowledge the fact that god is our provider. Again this is telling us to put our trust in God and he will provide.

       4. Forgiveness

Verse 12 says  “And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.” This is about asking for forgiveness and a reminder about forgiving others.

       5. Daily Struggles

Finally verse 13 says “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” God does not deliberately tempt us but he does allow us to be tested by it. This tells us we need to pray for help to resist temptation and Satan.

Prayer in everyday situations – Part 1

Prayer is the communication between you and God.  As a child it get’s described as a phone call between you and God. I think this is a great description as it reminds you that prayer can be used throughout daily life, anywhere, any place and any time.

We phone people for lots of reasons; to say thank you, sorry, ask questions and for help. We can also pray for all of these. However often things get in the way; family, friends, work and school. Often we forget to pray or just can’t be bothered to take the time out of daily life to pray.

If you look at the bible Jesus takes time out to go and pray. Before Jesus was going to be arrested Jesus prayed to God even upon the cross Jesus prayed. Luke 23,34 says Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus’s final words were a prayer before he died on the cross. Luke 23:46 says “Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. When he had said this, he breathed his last.” Even when Jesus was in the most excruciating pain he still prayed and talked to God.

The disciples asked Jesus how to pray and he tells them not to pray so everyone will listen and not to think they are better because they have a longer or fancier prayer but to make prayer a personal conversation between them and God.

If you have enjoyed reading this post, then we would thoroughly suggest you take a look our part 2, in which we continue to discuss the topic of prayer.

Suggestions Box

Whoever you are, this post is for you. All I am asking for is two minutes of your time to read this post and then however long it takes you afterwards (if you have the time available), to submit a suggestion. In return the RCG Team will read and try as hard as we can to put your suggestions into action. As RCGhub is a hub, it is everyone’s website, a space on the internet where you can share  your views and learn from others. Because of this we will happily change something about RCG, even if it just helps one person strengthen their relationship with God.

Anyway, this post is about the new suggestions page. We have created this page so that anyone who follows, or even just looks at RCGhub, can anonymously submit and suggestion they want, directly to the RCG Team. How ever big or small, we will listen and try to put into action all of the suggestions submitted. You don’t need to enter an email either, just revisit the page, around a week after submitting a suggestion and if we have done something about it, we will have written what we did, or are going to do, at the bottom of the page.

The box on the new page is for suggestions for something you would like us to write a post about, or a change to the layout of the blog, or the topic of a series, or any other suggestion that you can think of. Got something else to contact us about that isn’t a suggestion? Find all the different ways you can contact us on the ‘Contact/Follow Us’ page.

So now you know the one easy and quick thing we would love you to do. You can find the page next to all of the other pages down the left hand side of click the link below. To make it even easier for you to enter an anonymous suggestion, you can type it in the box below.
